Our sets are made in germany and contain sand and a special sand adhesive to work wonderful keepsakes of your child´s baby hand!

The best age of the child for making prints in sand ...
cannot be stipulated.
Small babies possess a natural gripping reflex,which can prevent a clean print when stretching out to make this motion in the sand. Many customers report however, that the print, especially that of the foot, is certainly possible with babies of only a few months. Parents must decide for themselves the earliest age where this is suitable for their own child. The upper limit is set only by the size of the hand or foot. The square sets have an area of 15 x 15cm, the rectangular sets are 19 x 12cm. Thus, before purchase simply draw a suitable rectangle on a piece of A4 paper, so that you can see whether your child’s hand or foot (or hand and foot) fit.

For a deep hand print ...
there are two methods:
1.) Lay the child’s hand on the sand, push down the fingers one after the other and then the palm of the hand, moving the hand slightly to and fro - like giving slight jolts to the hand - until the hand is deep enough in the sand.
2.) If this remains unsuccessful, remove half of the sand from the frame and put to one side. Press sand well down into the sides and on base. Then take remaining sand and shake into set frame, scraping off the surplus with the spatula, without pushing the sand down. The sand will then be loose enough for the print and after hardening will be solid.

Thorough mixing of the sand ...
is very important. The small amount of sand hardening agent must adhere to every sand grain, so that the print sets. For this, sand and sand hardening agent should be mixed for so long that neither a dry grain of sand, nor a drop of sand hardening agent remains! To be really sure, shake out the mixed sand into a second bowl and mix once more.

Sand is ...
a natural, completely loose material, with a grain size ranging from 0.063mm to 2mm. It originates from the physical and chemical weathering of other rocks.
Our sand was deposited here during the ice age. Following extraction, it is sieved, washed and furnace dried, so that it always has the same quality. We chose this sand especially because of its colour, grain quality and its advantages for our hand print sets.

60 Minutes preparation time means ...
that from the moment where sand and sand hardening agent are mixed, you have 60 minutes until the print is completed and the sand mixture should no longer be touched. During this preparation time there is no problem about repeating the process of removing the mixture from the frame, patting and smoothing it over and renewing the print! Under normal temperatures an even longer preparation time is possible. However, as we have no influence on this, we guarantee the aforesaid 60 minutes only.

The use of sand means that ...
the completed hand print is as heavy as sandstone. The print does not require any “improvements” and has all the charm of holiday and nature in itself. However, scattered sand grains can scratch smooth surfaces. Thus, ensure that a living room table is adequately covered, or that the work takes place in a “suitable” environment!

When work on the print is finished, ...
do not move the frame until the sand is set! Ideally, complete the print somewhere where the finished product can remain undisturbed for one to two days. If moving the print is absolutely necessary, do this as follows: slide the box with the finished print to the edge of the work surface, take a metal sheet, large heavy book or similar to extend the work surface and slide the frame onto this. Carry out this operation in reverse when bringing the finished print to its new place.

The child’s name ...
can be immortalized on the print in different ways:
1) If the print is small and the name short enough, you can try to scratch the name in the sand with, for example, a toothpick as on the beach. When doing this, it is best to scratch the name with small strokes. This requires a little patience and is not always successful! As a tip: as soon as the sand mixture is smoothed into the frame, try out a few letters before pressing the child’s hand in the sand, which means you can smooth them over again. However, if the hand print is already completed, such experiments are more difficult.
2) Perhaps more time-consuming, but certainly reliable and elegant: get a metal plate engraved with the child’s name and perhaps the date of birth, and insert this carefully in the damp sand, when the print is completed. Should this plate become loose when the mass is hard, simply stick it in again.
3) Ingenious and simple:
Write the child’s name and/or date of print on to a sea shell or smooth stone with a felt-tip pen, and push this into the damp sand on completion of the print. If, after hardening, the shell or stone does not hold, simply stick it in again.
4) With short names: one customer printed her child’s name in the sand with pastry cutters after completing the print and while the sand was still damp.
5) With the wooden frame sets (Art. Nr. 21110 and 21210), the name and the date of print can be carried out in a number of ways. Ideally, this should be tried out on the rear of the frame first and it is also advisable to rub the frame with sandpaper first, to get a smooth surface:
- You can write directly on the wooden frame with pencil, crayon or felt-tip;
- Wooden letters, coloured or plain can be stuck on the frame and/or hardened sand (the wooden frame is 3cm wide, and measures 21 x 21cm);
- Acrylic, oil or water colour paint can be applied directly to the frame. This can be tested first on the rear, and the colour should not be thinned down too much;
- The name and/or date of print may also be burnt into the frame with a torch. This can also be tried out on the rear side of frame.
- Not so easy, but effective is the use of Window Colours black paint for the outline of the letters, and when dry using colour to fill them in.

Fixing objects in the sand ...
is easy. They should be pushed down in the mixture as soon as the print is finished and the sand still damp. Most objects stick in the completed hand print. If an object should fall out after hardening, it can easily be stuck back with wood glue or multi-purpose glue. Wood glue can even be used to stick objects onto the hardened sand mass.
